Car Hauler Insurance

Car Hauler Insurance

Looking for Car Hauler Insurance?

A car hauler’s operation involves the transport of high-value cargo. Many auto haulers in the US are capable of carrying 5 to 9 cars (some even more) and ship those to dealers, auctions, and other locations. This involves more risk than a drop-and-hook operation, which means that an average insurance policy will not cover your needs.

As transportation risk specialists, we understand your operations and how underwriters think to ensure you get the best results on your insurance.

Car Hauler Risks

Road/Weather Conditions: Many car haulers are open trailers. Weather is spontaneous and it leaves the cars in the open trailer without any protection from storms, high-wind, rain, and wildlife.

Damage to Cars: Depending on what type of cars you haul, the repair costs for any damages may be substantial or worse if in event of an actual total loss or salvage.

Clearance: Depending on the trailer configuration of your load, some may reach a height that will give the truck clearance issues. Not watching the clearance can lead to major damage.

Theft: Cars are a very valuable load. Thieves may try to take entire cars or even steal their valuable components.

Insurance Considerations

Loading & Unloading: Insurance policies limit cargo coverage depending on the loading and unloading distance on the policy. You may unload the cars at the customer’s premises, but sometimes there is no space for the truck, and you may need to unload outside the location. Some policies limit coverage to curbside, 100 ft, 500+ feet, etc. In the previous circumstance, you need your policy to cover the unloading and loading distances you will see during your policy period.

Unattended Vehicle Theft Exclusions: Car hauler policies have many exclusions pertaining to leaving your vehicle unattended, even if it is for a short time. Some policies may cover the loss if “reasonable measures” were taken to prevent theft. Make sure your agent and insurer specify what “reasonable measures” are and if theft and vandalism are covered on the policy.

Diminished Value: When a direct or accidental loss happens and there is damage to the car being transported, the vehicle experiences an actual or perceived loss in market value or resale value. Basically, the reduction in the value of the car is more than the cost of repairs. This protects you from having to pay the difference between the actual cash value (mkt value) of the car now, and what the vehicle was worth before the event.

Constructive Total Loss: When the damage to a vehicle is so great that the cost to repair a car is more than the market value (actual cash value) of the car.

Striking a load: Sometimes the configuration of the trailer can be so high that there may be some clearance issues for auto haulers, in this case you need to know if your insurance carrier will cover damage based on clearance. There may be exclusions to this.

Why Insurance Matters

When you own a car hauling business such as transport companies, car dealerships, or repossession companies, to name a few, you need to purchase various types of insurance related to vehicle transport. It’s not just your truck you have to worry about. If anything were to happen to any of the cars or commercial trucks you are hauling, it would come out of your paycheck.
